Creative Variables in the Mash Squat Every Day

20131126-100703

Creative Variables or what Louie Simmons might call the Conjugate Method have always been one of the keys to success in my Squat Plans. I like the conjugate system for two main reasons:

1. The slight changes force the body to continue to adapt.

2. Change is always fun, and that is one important aspect of training that most people don’t talk about.

I am not as dramatic in my variables as Louie, but they are still there. I have been training for thirty-two years, so I need change just to keep things fun. Here are a few examples of variables:

1. Pauses 1 to 5 seconds

2. Varied reps 1-5, and sometimes an evil 10.

3. Pause the first rep only in a “Rep Max Set”

4. Pause all the reps in a “Rep Max Set”

5. High Bar, Low Bar, Front Squat, and maybe the occasional Zercher Squat.

6. Bands

7. Chains

8. Plate Releasers- These are inexpensive tools that hook to the ends of a bar. They are designed to hold extra weight, and they are also designed to pop off at the bottom of a squat. Basically you could lower 500lb, 100lb kicks off in the bottom, and then stand up with 400lb. This is a great way to break through sticking points.

9. Varied Stance- Close to wide

Here is an example of super wide!

And then there is me! lol

10. Quarter Squats- these are squats where you squat all the way down, come half way up, down again, and then up.

If you do the math, I just gave you hundreds of ways to change up your squats every day. I have been trying to add it up, and it is just too early. If you just come in and hit a max squat every day, you are going to get tired of that quickly. Your body is going to get tired of that quickly.

I didn’t really mention specialty bars. It is not that they don’t work, but for most of you these variables with a good old fashioned bar will do the trick. If you are going to be a professional powerlifter, then you might want to consider a specialty bar. I used a Cambered Squat Bar on Wednesday for the first time in five years. I mainly did it for fun and a little change. Now I probably won’t use it again for five years.

Remember guys, have fun in all that you do! We are not curing cancer. We are just experimenting with our bodies. The process of getting big a strong is supposed to be fun. Try to remember what it was like when you first started the process. Do whatever it takes to keep that same enthusiasm and excitement.

Now go have fun and Squat Today!
